What is Gulika Kaal?
Gulika Kaal (known as Kuligai Kalam in Tamil) is the third of the three inauspicious daily periods in Vedic astrology. It is associated with Gulika — a sub-planet (upagraha) considered the son of Saturn (Shani). The period carries Saturn-like energy: heavy, restrictive, and unfavourable for auspicious new beginnings.
Gulika Kaal is calculated similarly to Rahu Kaal by dividing the day into eight equal portions. The timing by weekday: Sunday 3rd, Monday 6th, Tuesday 5th, Wednesday 4th, Thursday 3rd, Friday 2nd, Saturday 1st. Duration is approximately 90 minutes and differs by city latitude and season.
Gulika holds special significance in Kerala and Karnataka astrology. In Jyotish (Vedic astrology), Gulika's position in a birth chart indicates malefic influences. The daily Gulika Kaal is widely observed in South Indian states for avoiding new ventures, property transactions, agreements, and sacred rituals. In Tamil tradition, it is also written as Guligai Kalam.
