What is Numerology?

Numerology is the study of numbers as a language — a system for understanding the patterns, tendencies, and deeper purpose encoded in the circumstances of a person's birth. It is not fortune-telling. It is closer to a map: it shows the terrain of your nature, not the specific roads you will take.

The word numerology combines Latin numerus (number) with Greek logos (reason, word). The study of numbers as carriers of meaning is ancient, found in Pythagoras' Greece, the Hebrew Kabbalah, Chinese tradition, and the Vedic tradition of India — where numbers are associated with cosmic forces and planetary periods.

Chaldean vs Pythagorean Numerology

Two major systems dominate Western numerology:

Pythagorean (Western) assigns letters sequentially: A=1, B=2, C=3... Z=8. It is widely used and easy to calculate, but Pythagorean values are assigned by modern alphabetical order.

Chaldean (Ancient) assigns letter values based on the vibrational quality of each sound, as observed by the ancient Chaldeans of Mesopotamia — the same civilisation that laid the foundations of Babylonian astrology. Chaldean values go only from 1–8 (9 is considered sacred and not assigned). The result is more nuanced and is considered more precise for reading a person's deeper nature.

ShubhDivas uses the Chaldean system for all name number calculations. This is the system most closely aligned with Vedic tradition, and it is the one professional numerologists in India typically use.

How Your Life Path Number is Calculated

The Life Path Number is the most important number in your chart. It is calculated from your full date of birth.

Method: Write out all the digits of your date of birth (YYYY-MM-DD) and sum them. Keep reducing until you reach a single digit — unless the sum or any intermediate step produces 11, 22, or 33, which are Master Numbers and are never reduced.

Example — Life Path 9: Date of birth: September 15, 1992 Digits: 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 + 0 + 9 + 1 + 5 = 36 Reduce: 3 + 6 = 9

Example — Life Path 7: Date of birth: January 28, 1994 Digits: 1 + 9 + 9 + 4 + 0 + 1 + 2 + 8 = 34 Reduce: 3 + 4 = 7

Master Numbers — 11, 22, 33

When the reduction process produces 11, 22, or 33 at any stage, the number is preserved as a Master Number rather than being reduced further. These are considered to carry heightened vibrational intensity and spiritual responsibility.

  • 11 — The Master Intuitive: Bridge between the material and spiritual worlds. Highly sensitive, creative, and often drawn to spiritual or artistic work.
  • 22 — The Master Builder: The most powerful number in numerology. Combines the vision of 11 with the practical capacity of 4. Rare ability to build at civilisational scale.
  • 33 — The Master Teacher: The rarest of the three. Pure expression of compassionate, healing wisdom. The number of the great teachers.

Master Numbers are both a gift and a burden. They require more integration and inner work than single-digit life paths, and they are lived most fully only when the person has done the deeper personal work their number demands.

What Each Number Means

Each Life Path from 1 to 9 carries a distinct archetype:

NumberArchetypeCore Theme
1The LeaderIndependence, originality, pioneering
2The PeacemakerPartnership, diplomacy, sensitivity
3The CreatorExpression, joy, communication
4The BuilderStructure, discipline, foundation
5The Freedom SeekerChange, adventure, versatility
6The NurturerResponsibility, care, harmony
7The SeekerWisdom, analysis, spiritual depth
8The AchieverPower, abundance, material mastery
9The HumanitarianCompletion, compassion, universal love

Numerology and Vedic Astrology Together

Numerology and Vedic astrology are complementary, not competing. In Vedic tradition, numbers are directly associated with planets:

NumberPlanet
1Sun (Surya)
2Moon (Chandra)
3Jupiter (Guru)
4Rahu
5Mercury (Budha)
6Venus (Shukra)
7Ketu
8Saturn (Shani)
9Mars (Mangal)

Your Life Path Number points to the planetary energy most central to your life's purpose. Combined with your Vimshottari Dasha (which shows when planetary influences are most active) and your Shadbala (which shows how strong those planets are in your chart), numerology becomes a powerful cross-reference tool.

How to Use Your Numbers Practically

Life Path Number: Your fundamental orientation in life — the kind of contribution you are designed to make. Use it to assess whether your current career and relationships are aligned with your core nature.

Name Number (Destiny): The energy you project into the world through your name. If your name number and life path are in tension, you may feel a persistent sense of not quite being in the right role.

Soul Urge Number (Vowels): What you privately desire at the deepest level. Often what drives your decisions even when you cannot explain why.

Personality Number (Consonants): The face you show the world — your outer presentation and first impression. Useful for understanding the gap (if any) between how others perceive you and who you know yourself to be.

The most integrated and fulfilled people are those whose Life Path, Name Number, and current life circumstances are all pulling in the same direction.
