What is Bhadra?
Bhadra is another name for the Vishti karana, the seventh of the movable karanas. A karana is half a tithi, so Bhadra runs for roughly ten to thirteen hours and recurs about eight times in a lunar month.
Classically avoided during Bhadra:
- Starting a new business or signing agreements
- Marriage ceremonies and engagement
- Griha pravesh and laying foundations
- Beginning a journey for gain
Raksha Bandhan and Holika Dahan are traditionally performed only after Bhadra has ended.
Bhadra vaas — does it actually apply?
This is the part most calendars leave out. Bhadra resides in one of three lokas depending on the Moon’s rashi, and it is only held to affect work on earth while it resides on Prithvi:
- Prithvi (effective) — Moon in Karka, Simha, Kumbha or Meena
- Swarga (no effect on earth) — Moon in Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna or Vrishchika
- Patala (no effect on earth) — Moon in Kanya, Tula, Dhanu or Makara
