Dhanteras 2026 — Friday November 6. Gold and silver coins, brass utensils, a Lakshmi-Kubera diya and marigolds for the first day of Diwali

Dhanteras 2026 falls on Friday, November 6. It is the first day of the five-day Diwali festival, observed on the Trayodashi of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of the Kartik month, and above all the day of auspicious buying — of gold, silver, and new utensils — and of the worship of Dhanvantari, the divine physician, and of Lakshmi and Kubera, the deities of wealth. Its very name says its purpose: Dhan (wealth) and teras (the thirteenth).

The day carries a promise of prosperity for the year: what is bought and worshipped on Dhanteras is believed to multiply, and the home is lit and cleaned to welcome Lakshmi. Here is the verified date, the Pradosh puja and buying muhurat, what to buy (and what to avoid), the puja vidhi, and the Yama Deepam that guards the household.

The Pradosh (twilight) window is the most auspicious for both the puja and the purchase. Timings shift by your city's longitude — confirm the exact muhurat for your city on the ShubhDivas Panchanga.

The Significance of Dhanteras

Dhanteras marks the appearance of Lord Dhanvantari — the physician of the gods who rose from the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan) holding the pot of amrita, the nectar of immortality, and who is honoured as the origin of Ayurveda. So the day blesses not only wealth but health, the truest wealth of all; many begin Ayurvedic remedies or health resolutions on Dhanteras.

It is also the day the goddess Lakshmi is invited into the home for the Diwali season, worshipped alongside Kubera, the treasurer of the gods. Homes are cleaned and decorated, doorways lit with diyas and drawn with rangoli, so that Lakshmi, who is said to visit clean and lit homes, may enter and stay. What is earned, bought, and worshipped on this day is believed to grow through the year.

What to Buy on Dhanteras — and What to Avoid

Buying something new on Dhanteras is the heart of the day, a token of inviting prosperity. The traditional favourites:

  • Gold and silver — coins, jewellery, or a small article; silver especially is linked to Lakshmi and the moon's cool, growing energy.
  • New utensils — brass, bronze, copper, or steel vessels; a metal pot brought home full (of water or grain) is especially auspicious.
  • Dhania (coriander seeds) — sown or kept for prosperity; and Kubera or Lakshmi coins and idols for the puja.
  • A broom (jhadu) — humble but classic, seen as sweeping in Lakshmi and out poverty.
  • Electronics, vehicles, or property — a modern and equally valid purchase, since Dhanteras is an auspicious buying day.

What to avoid buying: by tradition, iron and sharp objects (knives, black items, oil) are avoided as inauspicious gifts of the day; and do not buy on credit or in a rush — the spirit is of auspicious acquisition, not debt.

Dhanteras Puja Vidhi

  1. Clean and light the home. Complete the Diwali cleaning, draw rangoli at the threshold, and light diyas at the door and the tulsi.
  2. In the Pradosh muhurat (about 6:00–8:30 PM), set the puja with idols or images of Lakshmi, Ganesha, Kubera, and Dhanvantari, the newly bought gold/silver or utensil placed before them.
  3. Worship with roli, akshata, flowers, incense, a lamp, and naivedya (sweets); recite the Lakshmi and Kubera mantras and the Dhanvantari stotra, and perform arati.
  4. Offer to Kubera for the growth of wealth, and place the worshipped coins in your locker or cash box as shri for the year.

Yama Deepam — the Lamp That Guards the Home

A quiet but important ritual of Dhanteras evening is Yama Deepam (Yama Deepdaan). After sunset, a single diya of mustard or sesame oil is lit and placed facing south — the direction of Yama, the lord of death — usually at the doorway or by the drain, away from the puja lamps. It is offered to Yama with a prayer to protect the household from untimely death and misfortune. The custom traces to a tale of a young prince fated to die on the fourth day of his marriage: his clever wife kept him awake with songs and lamplight and heaped her gold and jewels at the door, so that when Yama's serpent came, it was dazzled by the blaze of lamps and gold and turned away — and so lamps and wealth at the threshold on Dhanteras guard life itself.

Dhanteras and the Five Days of Diwali

Dhanteras opens the great festival. Over the coming days: Dhanteras (Nov 6) for wealth and health; Naraka Chaturdashi / Choti Diwali (Nov 7); Diwali & Lakshmi Puja (Nov 8), the main night; Govardhan Puja / Annakut (Nov 9); and Bhai Dooj (Nov 10), the bond of brother and sister — all covered in our November 2026 auspicious dates. Because Dhanteras is a classic day for auspicious buying, it is also a favourite for a new vehicle, gold, or the start of something prosperous.

Frequently asked questions

Dhanteras 2026 is on Friday, November 6 — the Trayodashi of the Krishna Paksha of the Kartik month, and the first of the five days of Diwali. It is followed by Naraka Chaturdashi (Nov 7), Diwali and Lakshmi Puja (Nov 8), Govardhan Puja (Nov 9), and Bhai Dooj (Nov 10).
The Dhanteras puja and buying muhurat is during Pradosh Kaal, approximately 06:00 PM to 08:30 PM on November 6, 2026 — the twilight window considered most auspicious for worshipping Lakshmi, Kubera, and Dhanvantari and for making the day's purchase. The exact window shifts by city; confirm it on the ShubhDivas Panchanga.
The traditional Dhanteras purchases are gold and silver (coins, jewellery, or a small article), new metal utensils (brass, bronze, copper, or steel), Lakshmi-Kubera coins, dhania (coriander seeds), and a broom. Electronics, vehicles, and property are equally valid modern buys, as Dhanteras is an auspicious buying day. Avoid buying iron, sharp objects, or black items, and avoid buying on credit.
Yama Deepam is the lighting of a single mustard or sesame oil diya after sunset on Dhanteras, placed facing south — the direction of Yama, the lord of death — usually at the doorway. It is offered with a prayer to protect the household from untimely death and misfortune, recalling the tale of a prince saved from Yama by a blaze of lamps and gold heaped at his door.
Dhanteras celebrates the appearance of Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician who rose from the churning of the ocean with the pot of amrita, and who is the origin of Ayurveda — so the day blesses both wealth and health. It is also the day Goddess Lakshmi and Kubera are worshipped to invite prosperity for the Diwali season, and what is bought and worshipped on this day is believed to multiply through the year.
