Nirjala Ekadashi 2026 โ€” Date, Vrat Vidhi, Significance and Muhurat | ShubhDivas

Nirjala Ekadashi 2026 falls on Thursday, June 25. Complete guide to the date, tithi timing, vrat vidhi, parana time, daan vidhi, and why observing this one fast carries the merit of all 24 Ekadashis.

Nirjala Ekadashi 2026 โ€” waterless fast on June 25, Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu

Of all the Ekadashis observed across the Hindu lunar calendar, Nirjala Ekadashi stands entirely apart. It falls during the Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha โ€” the peak of summer, when the sun is at its most relentless โ€” and it asks something no other Ekadashi asks: a full day without food and without water. Not a fruit fast. Not a grain-free day. Complete abstinence, including water, from sunrise to the following morning's Parana. The Puranas are unambiguous about what this earns: one who observes Nirjala Ekadashi with true devotion receives the accumulated merit of all 24 Ekadashis of the year combined. In 2026, this fast falls on Thursday, June 25 โ€” a Guruvar, the day of Jupiter and of Vishnu himself โ€” a coincidence that the tradition considers deeply auspicious and that multiplies the merit of every prayer offered during the day.

What Nirjala Ekadashi Is โ€” and Why It Stands Apart

Nirjala means without water โ€” nir (without) and jala (water). Every other Ekadashi fast permits at minimum water, milk, and fruits. This one does not. The strictness is deliberate and purposeful, and the story behind it โ€” from the Brahma Vaivarta Purana โ€” makes the point with characteristic directness.

Bhima, the second of the five Pandava brothers, was a man of extraordinary appetite and equally extraordinary honesty. He knew he could not observe all 24 Ekadashis in a year โ€” the hunger would overcome him. He went to Maharishi Vyasa and asked whether there was another way, a single fast that would give him the merit he could not otherwise accumulate. Vyasa told him: observe the Ekadashi of Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha without food and without water. Endure the full heat of the summer day without drinking a drop. What you earn from that single observance is equal to what you would earn from fasting on all 24 Ekadashis of the year. Bhima agreed, observed the fast, and the Ekadashi has since been called Bhimseni Ekadashi or Pandava Nirjala Ekadashi alongside its primary name.

This origin story is not incidental to the practice. It explains why Nirjala Ekadashi exists and who it was designed for โ€” people who cannot maintain the Ekadashi vrat through the year but wish to honour it fully in the one window where the full year's merit is available in a single day.

Date and Tithi for 2026

The Ekadashi Tithi of Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha begins at 6:12 PM on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, and ends at 8:09 PM on Thursday, June 25, 2026. Because the Tithi is active at sunrise on June 25, the fast is observed on Thursday, June 25 according to the Udaya Tithi convention followed across North India.

The Parana โ€” the breaking of the fast โ€” takes place on the following morning, Friday, June 26, between 5:25 AM and 8:13 AM. Parana must happen within this window. Breaking the fast before 5:25 AM or after 8:13 AM is considered inauspicious and diminishes the merit of the vrat. The first thing consumed after Parana is traditionally water โ€” offered first to Vishnu in prayer, then drunk. A sattvic meal of fruits, milk, and light food follows. Avoid grains until the afternoon if possible.

The coincidence of Thursday deserves particular attention. Guruvar โ€” Thursday โ€” is the day sacred to Brihaspati (Jupiter) and, by association, to Vishnu. Offering prayers to Vishnu on a Thursday that falls on Nirjala Ekadashi compounds the auspiciousness of the day considerably. Mantras chanted, lamps lit, and daan given on this day carry the weight of both the Ekadashi's merit and the Thursday's planetary blessings simultaneously.

Vrat Vidhi โ€” How to Observe the Fast Correctly

The evening before (June 24). Begin your preparation on Dashami โ€” the day before Ekadashi. Take a sattvic meal before sunset on June 24. Avoid non-vegetarian food, alcohol, onion, and garlic from this meal onward. Sleep early. The intention for the fast โ€” the sankalpa โ€” is best formed clearly on Dashami evening before sleeping.

Sunrise on June 25 โ€” the fast begins. Wake before dawn. Bathe before sunrise. This is not optional for Nirjala Ekadashi โ€” the bath at dawn is part of the vrat vidhi, and the fast is considered to begin from this point. After bathing, take the formal sankalpa: face east, hold water in your right palm, and state your intention aloud โ€” your name, your gotra, your purpose, and the commitment to observe Nirjala Ekadashi for the full day without food or water. Release the water as an offering.

What the fast requires. From the sankalpa onward, nothing enters the body โ€” not food, not water, not medicine unless medically unavoidable. If you are elderly, unwell, pregnant, or managing a health condition that makes waterless fasting genuinely dangerous, the tradition permits water or the lighter Phalahar Ekadashi fast. Observing what your body safely permits and offering that sincerely is always more meritorious than harm.

Puja during the day. Vishnu is the presiding deity of Nirjala Ekadashi. Place a Vishnu or Shaligram murti in your puja space. Offer Panchamrit โ€” milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar โ€” as abhishek. Place yellow flowers, Tulsi leaves, and a ghee deepam before the deity. Yellow is particularly auspicious on Thursdays and is sacred to both Jupiter and Vishnu. Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama โ€” the thousand names of Vishnu โ€” once fully during the day. Even listening to it being recited carries the full merit if recitation is not possible.

Remaining through the afternoon. The peak heat of a June afternoon is the most difficult part of this fast โ€” and intentionally so. The Puranas indicate that the heat of Jyeshtha is part of what makes Nirjala Ekadashi's merit so substantial. Remaining calm, continuing prayer or nama-japa, and staying indoors where possible is the guidance. Chanting Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya throughout the day is the most widely recommended practice. Spend the afternoon in reading the Bhagavata Purana, listening to kirtan, or sitting quietly in meditation.

The night of June 25. Do not sleep until after midnight on Nirjala Ekadashi if possible. Jagaran โ€” the nightlong vigil โ€” is the ideal. If a full vigil is not possible, stay awake at least until midnight. Some families gather for kirtan or bhajan through the evening, which eases the vigil considerably.

Daan Vidhi โ€” What to Donate on Nirjala Ekadashi

Daan on Nirjala Ekadashi is considered among the most meritorious acts of the year, and what you donate is connected directly to the Jyeshtha heat. The classical texts recommend donating items that bring relief from summer: water in a clay pot, sugarcane juice, hand fans, umbrellas, footwear, cotton cloth. Donate to a Brahmin, a temple, or the poor. Providing meals after the Parana on June 26 โ€” to those who fasted and to others in need โ€” is a traditional act of generosity associated with this Ekadashi. Donating shoes or slippers for those who walk barefoot in summer heat is specifically mentioned in the Puranas as exceptionally meritorious on this day.

Parana โ€” Breaking the Fast on June 26

The Parana window on Friday, June 26 is 5:25 AM to 8:13 AM. This window must be respected. Parana at the wrong time can reduce the merit of the entire day's fast โ€” the classical texts are consistent on this point. Begin by offering water to Vishnu, then drink water yourself. Follow with milk or fruit, then a light sattvic meal. Avoid heavy grain-based food in the first meal. Express gratitude for having been able to complete the vrat.

If you are in a city where the sunrise time differs significantly from IST, these timings will vary. Check the ShubhDivas Panchanga for Parana times adjusted to your location.

Remedies and Mantras for Nirjala Ekadashi 2026

Primary mantra for the full day: Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya โ€” chant 108 times in the morning, and repeat through the day. This is the Dwadasakshari mantra โ€” the twelve-syllable mantra of Vishnu โ€” and it is specifically recommended for Ekadashi observance in the Bhagavata Purana.

For Jupiter (Brihaspati), since this falls on Thursday: Om Gram Greem Graum Sah Guruve Namah โ€” 108 repetitions at dawn before the puja. Lighting a ghee lamp and applying a saffron tilak on Thursday Ekadashi honours both the day and the fast together.

Vishnu Sahasranama โ€” recite once during the day, ideally in the late morning after the puja. If you cannot recite it in full, listening to it being recited โ€” either in person or through audio โ€” is considered equivalent in merit.

For those who observe the nightlong vigil: sing or listen to the Hare Krishna Mahamantra through the night. The vigil on Nirjala Ekadashi is one of the most auspicious of the year, and the mantra sustained through it carries exceptional weight in the Vaishnava tradition.

Frequently asked questions

Nirjala Ekadashi 2026 is on Thursday, June 25. The Ekadashi Tithi of Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha begins at 6:12 PM on June 24 and ends at 8:09 PM on June 25. The fast is observed on June 25 as per the Udaya Tithi convention. The Parana โ€” breaking of the fast โ€” is on Friday, June 26, between 5:25 AM and 8:13 AM.
No. Nirjala Ekadashi is the only Ekadashi where even water is not permitted during the fast. The word Nirjala itself means without water. The fast runs from the pre-dawn bath and sankalpa on June 25 until the Parana on the morning of June 26. Those who are elderly, unwell, pregnant, or managing health conditions that make this genuinely dangerous may take water or observe the lighter Phalahar fast. Observing sincerely within what your body safely permits is always more meritorious than harm.
Thursday is Guruvar โ€” the day of Brihaspati (Jupiter) and sacred to Vishnu. When Nirjala Ekadashi falls on a Thursday, both the Ekadashi's merit and the day's planetary blessings compound each other. Prayers, mantra, and daan offered on this day carry the weight of both simultaneously. This particular coincidence is noted in the traditional panchanga literature as specially auspicious, and it is one reason that the 2026 observance is considered especially significant.
The Parana window on Friday, June 26 is 5:25 AM to 8:13 AM. The fast must be broken within this window. Breaking the fast before 5:25 AM or after 8:13 AM is considered inauspicious and is said to reduce the merit of the vrat. Begin Parana with water offered to Vishnu first, then water for yourself, followed by milk or fruit and a light sattvic meal. These timings are for IST โ€” if you are outside India or in a location where sunrise differs significantly, check your local Parana time on the ShubhDivas Panchanga.
Yes โ€” this is stated explicitly in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, which contains the Bhima-Vyasa dialogue that is the origin of this Ekadashi. Maharishi Vyasa tells Bhima that observing Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi without food or water gives the same merit as fasting on all 24 Ekadashis of the year. This is the reason Nirjala Ekadashi is observed even by those who cannot maintain the Ekadashi vrat through the year โ€” it is the one opportunity to receive the full year's merit in a single day of sincere observance.
