Sutak kaal — when it applies
Sutak is the preparatory period before an eclipse when temples close and cooking, eating and new undertakings are paused. It begins 12 hours before a solar eclipse and 9 hours before a lunar eclipse, and ends when the eclipse ends.
The rule most often missed: sutak is observed only where the eclipse is visible. An eclipse happening on the other side of the world is astronomically real but carries no sutak in India — which is why some eclipses on this page show no sutak window at all.
Children, the elderly and the unwell are traditionally exempt from the fasting restrictions.
How these timings are calculated
Eclipse dates and types are computed from the Sun–Moon geometry rather than copied from a list, and reproduce the published tables for 2026–27 exactly.
A lunar eclipse is an event on the Moon itself, so its phases begin and end at the same instant for everyone who can see the Moon — those timings are exact. A solar eclipse depends on where you stand: first contact in Chennai and in Delhi differ by many minutes. For solar events we therefore publish the greatest-eclipse instant and do not invent local contact times.
