Why sunrise matters in the panchanga
Sunrise is the anchor of the Hindu day. The vara (weekday) changes at sunrise rather than at midnight, and Rahu Kaal, Yamagandam, Gulika Kaal, Choghadiya, Hora and the muhurta divisions are all measured as fractions of the interval between sunrise and sunset. An error of a few minutes in sunrise shifts every one of those windows.
ShubhDivas computes sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset from each city’s latitude, longitude and timezone using Meeus’ algorithms, which is why the timings here differ from a panchanga printed for a different city in the same state.
