What is Yamagandam?
Yamagandam (also called Yamakantam or Yama Kandam) is one of the three inauspicious daily periods in Vedic astrology, alongside Rahu Kaal and Gulika Kaal. It is named after Yama, the Hindu god of death and dharma who presides over the afterlife and delivers justice. The period carries Yama's energy and is considered unfavourable for new beginnings.
Like Rahu Kaal, Yamagandam is calculated by dividing daylight hours into eight equal portions. The timing shifts by day of the week: Sunday 5th portion, Monday 4th, Tuesday 3rd, Wednesday 2nd, Thursday 1st, Friday 7th, Saturday 6th. The duration is approximately 90 minutes and varies slightly by season and city latitude.
Yamagandam is particularly observed in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. In Tamil tradition, it is called Yama Kandam. Families avoid starting journeys, business deals, signing legal documents, or beginning medical treatments during this period. It is also considered inauspicious for wedding muhurat selection.
