• Pitru Paksha — until October 10. Pitru Paksha runs to Sarva Pitru Amavasya (Mahalaya) on October 10, dedicated to ancestors through Shraddh, Tarpan, and Pind Daan. Dussehra is one of the classic abujh muhurats, meaning the whole day is auspicious for new undertakings without needing a narrower muhurat. Buying a vehicle, gold, or property, signing a new venture, or beginning any important learning on Dussehra is time-honoured. The Ghatasthapana morning of Navratri (Oct 11) and each of the nine days are likewise favourable for new beginnings and sadhana.

For property purchase and registration, the strong days are Dussehra (Oct 20) and the late-October auspicious dates (Oct 21–30) carrying the vehicle windows above. Remember the distinction: you may purchase and register property now, but the griha pravesh ceremony to move in should wait until Chaturmas ends in November. Avoid all of Pitru Paksha (Oct 1–10) for these purchases.

Naming Ceremony (Namkaran)

Namkaran may be performed after Pitru Paksha, keeping to the auspicious days from Oct 11 onward — though stricter family traditions defer all samskaras until Chaturmas ends. Because the right date depends heavily on the child's own Janma Nakshatra, confirm it with a personalised muhurat.

Pitru Paksha to Sarva Pitru Amavasya — October 1 to 10

The first ten days of October complete Pitru Paksha, ending with Sarva Pitru Amavasya (Mahalaya) on October 10 — the day to perform Shraddh for any ancestor whose tithi is unknown or was missed.
