Auspicious Dates in October 2026 — Navratri, Dussehra & Shubh Muhurat

October 2026 falls within Chaturmas, so there are no wedding or griha pravesh muhurats — but it is the festive-buying peak. Navratri (Oct 11–19) and Dussehra (Oct 20) open strong windows for vehicle, gold, property and new ventures, while Pitru Paksha (until Oct 10) is set aside for ancestors. Here are the verified auspicious dates.

Indian panchanga calendar for October 2026 with Navratri Durga and Dussehra motifs, diyas and marigold flowers

October 2026 is the festive high point of the year — Navratri and Dussehra fill the month with the worship of the Goddess and the year's most auspicious buying days. Yet October, like September, lies entirely inside Chaturmas, so there are no wedding or griha pravesh dates in October 2026 — the ceremony season resumes only in late November.

October has two clear halves. The first ten days belong to Pitru Paksha, the fortnight for the ancestors, when new beginnings are set aside. Then, from October 11, the mood turns entirely: Sharad Navratri (Oct 11–19) and Vijayadashami / Dussehra (Oct 20) open one of the best windows of the whole year for vehicles, gold, property, and new ventures. Here is the specific, panchanga-verified guidance.

Why October 2026 Has No Wedding or Griha Pravesh Muhurat

Chaturmas began on Devshayani Ekadashi, July 25, 2026, and runs until Prabodhini (Dev Uthani) Ekadashi around November 20–21, 2026. Through these four sacred months, weddings, griha pravesh (housewarming), and upanayana are traditionally suspended — and all of October falls inside this window.

So there are no vivah or griha pravesh muhurats in October 2026; this is a season-wide pause, not a chart-specific gap. The next wedding season opens after Dev Uthani Ekadashi in November. What October is made for is the Goddess's festival — and the festive, well-timed purchases that peak around Dussehra.

The Two Halves of October 2026

  • Pitru Paksha — until October 10. Pitru Paksha runs to Sarva Pitru Amavasya (Mahalaya) on October 10, dedicated to ancestors through Shraddh, Tarpan, and Pind Daan. Through these days, avoid new and celebratory beginnings — no buying vehicles, gold, or property, no launches or ceremonies. Indira Ekadashi (Oct 6) falls within it.
  • Navratri & Dussehra — October 11 to 20. The moment Pitru Paksha ends, Sharad Navratri (Oct 11–19) and Dussehra (Oct 20) open the festive-buying peak. Dussehra is a classic abujh (self-evident) muhurat — like Akshaya Tritiya — auspicious for almost any new undertaking without a narrower muhurat.

All windows below are based on the panchanga. Exact timings shift by your city's longitude — confirm the precise muhurat for your city with the ShubhDivas Panchanga before finalising anything, and always avoid the day's Rahu Kaal.

Buying a Vehicle (Car or Bike)

Vehicle purchase is not restricted by Chaturmas. The formal muhurat dates fall in late October, after Dussehra — because the strict nakshatra list skips Pitru Paksha (Oct 1–10) and the Navratri days (Oct 11–20). Five favourable dates:

DateDayWindow (IST)Nakshatra
Oct 21Wednesday06:11 AM → 06:11 AM (Oct 22)Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha
Oct 22Thursday06:11 AM → 02:47 PMShatabhisha
Oct 25Sunday11:55 AM → 07:22 PMRevati
Oct 28Wednesday01:26 PM → 01:06 AM (Oct 29)Rohini
Oct 30Friday06:14 AM → 09:04 AMMrigashira

The Friday date (Oct 30) is especially good, as Venus rules vehicles and comforts. And beyond these formal windows, Dussehra (Oct 20) and the Navratri days are traditionally used to buy a new vehicle as an abujh muhurat even when the strict list is silent — see the next section.

Gold, Property & New Ventures — the Navratri–Dussehra Window

For gold, festive shopping, property, and starting a new business, the strongest window of the month is Navratri (Oct 11–19) and Vijayadashami / Dussehra (Oct 20). Dussehra is one of the classic abujh muhurats, meaning the whole day is auspicious for new undertakings without needing a narrower muhurat. Buying a vehicle, gold, or property, signing a new venture, or beginning any important learning on Dussehra is time-honoured. The Ghatasthapana morning of Navratri (Oct 11) and each of the nine days are likewise favourable for new beginnings and sadhana.

For property purchase and registration, the strong days are Dussehra (Oct 20) and the late-October auspicious dates (Oct 21–30) carrying the vehicle windows above. Remember the distinction: you may purchase and register property now, but the griha pravesh ceremony to move in should wait until Chaturmas ends in November. Avoid all of Pitru Paksha (Oct 1–10) for these purchases.

Naming Ceremony (Namkaran)

Namkaran may be performed after Pitru Paksha, keeping to the auspicious days from Oct 11 onward — though stricter family traditions defer all samskaras until Chaturmas ends. Because the right date depends heavily on the child's own Janma Nakshatra, confirm it with a personalised muhurat.

I was frightened that Rahu in my 8th house meant divorce or harm to my father. Acharya ji gently explained these are just fear-myths — never true from one placement — showed me my marriage house is genuinely strong, and calmed my heart. Honest and reassuring.

Pitru Paksha to Sarva Pitru Amavasya — October 1 to 10

The first ten days of October complete Pitru Paksha, ending with Sarva Pitru Amavasya (Mahalaya) on October 10 — the day to perform Shraddh for any ancestor whose tithi is unknown or was missed. Indira Ekadashi (Oct 6) falls within this fortnight, kept for the peace of departed souls. Through these days, hold back new purchases and beginnings; the fortnight belongs to remembrance. Everything resumes, and beautifully so, when Navratri begins on October 11.

Planetary Notes for October 2026

  • Tula Sankranti (Sun → Libra): October 17 — the Sun's shift into Libra begins the bright, festive turn toward Diwali.
  • No eclipses fall in October 2026, so there is no sutak to observe this month.
  • The month's energy strongly favours festive, well-timed purchases and new beginnings in its second half — with Dussehra the single most auspicious day.

Dates to Approach with Care in October 2026

PeriodWhy
Oct 1 – Oct 10Pitru Paksha — reserved for ancestors; avoid new purchases and beginnings
Oct 6, Oct 22Ekadashi vrat days — spiritual fasts, not for launching material ventures
Oct 10Sarva Pitru Amavasya (new moon) — inauspicious for starting new work
All monthChaturmas — no weddings, griha pravesh, or upanayana until ~Nov 20

A note on weekday rules: blanket sayings like "never start on a Tuesday" are only rough guides. A properly computed muhurat weighs the exact tithi, nakshatra, and lagna together — which is why Dussehra, a Tuesday this year, is one of the most auspicious days of all. Always trust a computed muhurat over a weekday superstition, and always avoid the daily Rahu Kaal, which varies by city.

How to Find Your Personal Muhurat

The dates above are the strongest general windows for October 2026. But a date that is auspicious in general is not automatically auspicious for your kundali. A personal muhurat must also weigh:

Your Janma Nakshatra — certain nakshatras (Janma, Vipat, Pratyak) are avoided relative to your Moon sign and checked against the day's nakshatra.

Your current Mahadasha and Antardasha — a Saturn or Rahu period adds avoidances even on an otherwise excellent date.

Use the ShubhDivas Muhurat Finder to enter your birth details and the activity — it computes a personalised muhurat that accounts for your kundali, the live panchanga, and your city's timing in one place. For daily Rahu Kaal, Choghadiya, and tithi, the ShubhDivas Panchanga is updated every day for all major Indian cities.

Frequently asked questions

No. All of October 2026 falls within Chaturmas, the four-month period (from Devshayani Ekadashi, July 25, 2026) when weddings, griha pravesh, and upanayana are traditionally suspended. There are no vivah muhurat in October. The next wedding season opens only after Prabodhini (Dev Uthani) Ekadashi, around November 20–21, 2026.
Yes. Vijayadashami / Dussehra falls on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, and is one of the classic abujh (self-evident) muhurats — like Akshaya Tritiya — so the whole day is auspicious for new undertakings without needing a narrower muhurat. It is a time-honoured day to buy gold, a vehicle, or property, to start a new business, or to begin learning something new. The Navratri days (Oct 11–19) are similarly favourable.
Yes. The formal vehicle muhurat dates fall after Dussehra — Oct 21, 22, 25, 28, and 30 — because the strict nakshatra list skips Pitru Paksha (Oct 1–10) and the Navratri days. Beyond these, Dussehra (Oct 20) and the Navratri days are traditionally used to buy a vehicle as an abujh muhurat. Avoid Pitru Paksha, and check the ShubhDivas Panchanga for your city's exact timing and Rahu Kaal.
Generally, no. Pitru Paksha runs until Sarva Pitru Amavasya on October 10, 2026, and is dedicated to the ancestors through Shraddh, Tarpan, and Pind Daan. Tradition holds back new and celebratory beginnings — buying a vehicle, gold, or property, launching a business, or holding a naming ceremony — through these first ten days of October. They resume from Navratri, which begins October 11.
Sharad Navratri 2026 begins with Ghatasthapana on Sunday, October 11, with Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami both on Monday, October 19. Vijayadashami (Dussehra) is on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Navratri and especially Dussehra are among the most auspicious days of the year for new purchases and beginnings.
