August 2026 is the heart of Sawan (Shravana) โ the most devotional month of the Hindu year, when Mondays belong to Shiva and the whole month hums with vrat and worship. But it is also entirely inside Chaturmas, the four-month window when Lord Vishnu sleeps. That single fact decides the muhurat picture for the month: there are no wedding or griha pravesh dates in August 2026 โ and there won't be until Chaturmas ends in late November.
That does not mean the month is empty. Vehicle purchases, property registration, business launches, and naming ceremonies are not bound by the Chaturmas wedding pause, and they have genuinely auspicious windows all through August. Here is the specific, panchanga-based guidance.
Why August 2026 Has No Wedding or Griha Pravesh Muhurat
Chaturmas began on Devshayani Ekadashi, July 25, 2026, and runs until Prabodhini (Dev Uthani) Ekadashi around November 20โ21, 2026. During these four sacred months, the great auspicious ceremonies โ weddings, griha pravesh (housewarming), and the upanayana thread ceremony โ are traditionally suspended. Every day of August falls inside this window.
So if you are looking for a vivah muhurat or a griha pravesh muhurat in August 2026, there are none. This is not a city-specific or chart-specific gap โ it is the entire month, by tradition. The next wedding and housewarming season opens only after Dev Uthani Ekadashi in November.
What August is good for is everything Sawan is famous for โ fasting, Shiva worship, charity โ plus the practical muhurats that continue right through Chaturmas.

Buying a Vehicle (Car or Bike)
Vehicle purchase is not restricted by Chaturmas, so August is a strong month โ ten favourable dates, several aligned with the auspicious Hasta, Pushya-family, and Rohini nakshatras that classically support new vehicles.
| Date | Day | Window (IST) | Nakshatra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aug 7 | Friday | 06:43 PM โ 05:47 AM (Aug 8) | Rohini |

The Friday dates (Aug 7, 28) are especially good โ Venus rules vehicles and material comforts. Always avoid the day's Rahu Kaal window even on an auspicious date.

| Aug 29 | Saturday | 07:14 AM โ 02:33 AM (Aug 30) | Magha |
A note on tradition: most panchang authorities permit Namkaran during Chaturmas, since it is not one of the prohibited mangal karyas. Stricter family traditions, however, defer all samskaras until Chaturmas ends. Both views are valid โ follow your family's custom, and because the right date depends heavily on the child's own nakshatra, confirm it with a personalised muhurat rather than the general list alone.

Sawan 2026 โ The Spiritual Heart of August
Where August closes the door on ceremonies, it opens it wide for devotion. The whole month is Sawan, and these are its key observances:
- Shravan Somwars โ Aug 3, 10, 17, 24 (Mondays): the four most powerful days of the month for Shiva worship, fasting, and Rudrabhishek. See our full guide to Sawan 2026 Somwar vrat and Shiva puja.
- Kamika Ekadashi โ Aug 9 (Sunday): an Ekadashi fast of great purifying merit.
- Sawan Shivaratri โ Aug 11 (Tuesday): the monthly Shivaratri within Sawan, the night for Shiva.
- Hariyali Amavasya โ Aug 12 (Wednesday): the green new moon of the monsoon, for tree-planting and ancestral offerings.
- Hariyali Teej โ Aug 15 (Saturday): the festival of green bangles and the swing, for married women's well-being. Read our Hariyali Teej 2026 guide.
- Nag Panchami โ Aug 17 (Monday): worship of the serpent deities, with morning puja muhurat. See Nag Panchami 2026 date and puja muhurat.
- Shravana Putrada Ekadashi โ Aug 23 (Sunday): the Ekadashi prayed by parents for children's well-being.
- Onam โ Aug 26 (Wednesday): Kerala's harvest festival of abundance.
- Raksha Bandhan โ Aug 28 (Friday): the bond of brother and sister. The Bhadra shadow clears before sunrise this year, so the rakhi muhurat is open from morning โ full timing in our Raksha Bandhan 2026 guide.
- Kajari Teej โ Aug 31 (Monday): the second Teej of the monsoon.
Planetary Movements in August 2026
The month carries a busy sky, which is part of why its energy favours worship and steady action over grand new beginnings:
- Venus โ Virgo: Aug 1 (Saturday)
- Mars โ Gemini: Aug 2 (Sunday)
- Mercury โ Cancer: Aug 5 (Wednesday)
- Sun โ Leo (Simha Sankranti): Aug 17 (Monday)
- Mercury โ Leo: Aug 22 (Saturday)
- New Moon (Amavasya): Aug 12 (Wednesday)
- Full Moon (Purnima): Aug 28 (Friday)
On the two August eclipses: a solar eclipse falls on Aug 12 and a lunar eclipse on Aug 28, but neither is visible from India. Because an eclipse's sutak applies only where it is visible, there is no sutak in India for either โ they do not affect fasting, puja, or the Raksha Bandhan morning rakhi muhurat here. You do not need to observe sutak timings in India this August.
Dates to Approach with Care in August 2026
| Date | Day | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Aug 9 | Sunday | Kamika Ekadashi โ a fasting and spiritual day, not for beginning material ventures |
| Aug 11 | Tuesday | Sawan Shivaratri โ reserved for Shiva worship and vigil |
| Aug 12 | Wednesday | Hariyali Amavasya (new moon) โ inauspicious for starting new work (eclipse not visible in India โ no sutak here) |
| Aug 23 | Sunday | Shravana Putrada Ekadashi โ a vrat day, not for material muhurat |
| All month | โ | Chaturmas โ no weddings, griha pravesh, or upanayana until ~Nov 20 |
A note on weekday rules: blanket guidance like "never start on a Tuesday" is only a rough guide. A properly computed muhurat weighs the exact tithi, nakshatra, and lagna together โ which is why some of the strongest vehicle and property windows above fall on days a simple rule would reject. Always trust a computed muhurat over a weekday superstition, and always avoid the daily Rahu Kaal window, which varies by city.
How to Find Your Personal Muhurat
The dates above are the strongest general windows for August 2026. But a date that is auspicious in general is not automatically auspicious for your kundali. A personal muhurat must also account for:
Your Janma Nakshatra โ certain nakshatras (Janma, Vipat, Pratyak) are avoided relative to your moon sign and must be checked against the day's nakshatra.
Your current Mahadasha and Antardasha โ a Saturn or Rahu period brings additional avoidances even on an otherwise excellent date.
Use the ShubhDivas Muhurat Finder to enter your birth details and the activity โ it computes a personalised muhurat that accounts for your kundali, the live panchanga, and your city's timing in one place. For daily Rahu Kaal, Choghadiya, and tithi, the ShubhDivas Panchanga is updated every day for all major Indian cities.
