Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, November 8 — the great festival of lights, and the night of Lakshmi Puja, when homes across India and the world are lit with rows of diyas to welcome Goddess Lakshmi, the bestower of wealth and wellbeing. Observed on the Amavasya (new moon) of the Kartik month, it is the darkest night of the year turned, by countless lamps, into the brightest — the eternal image of light triumphing over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil.
Diwali is the crescendo of a five-day festival that runs from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj, but its heart is the Lakshmi Puja performed in the Pradosh Kaal after sunset. Here is the verified date, the Lakshmi Puja muhurat, the puja vidhi, the meaning behind the lamps, and the full five-day schedule.

The Significance of Diwali
Diwali carries many meanings woven into one festival of light. In the north, it marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile and his victory over Ravana — the citizens lit rows of lamps to welcome their king, and the tradition of deepavali ("a row of lights") was born. Across India it is above all the night of Goddess Lakshmi, who is said to walk the earth on Kartik Amavasya and enter homes that are clean, lit, and open — blessing them with prosperity for the year. It also honours the emergence of Lakshmi from the churning of the cosmic ocean, and in the Jain tradition marks the nirvana of Mahavira.
For all its grandeur, the festival's inner meaning is simple and profound: the lamp we light outside is the light we kindle within — of wisdom over ignorance, generosity over greed, and hope over despair. Homes are cleaned and renewed, quarrels are set aside, debts settled, sweets shared — a whole society turning, together, toward a fresh and luminous beginning.
The Lakshmi Puja Muhurat — Pradosh Kaal and Vrishabha Lagna
The most auspicious time for Lakshmi Puja on Diwali is the Pradosh Kaal — the twilight hours after sunset — especially where it overlaps with the Vrishabha (Sthir / fixed) Lagna. In 2026, this window is roughly 06:27 PM to 08:27 PM (Pradosh Kaal itself running about 06:01–08:40 PM). The Vrishabha Lagna is a sthir (fixed) ascendant, and worshipping Lakshmi in a fixed lagna is believed to make her blessings stay in the home rather than pass through. Classical Drik-Ganit practice holds that the puja performed when Pradosh Kaal overlaps the Amavasya tithi carries the highest merit — which is exactly the case on the evening of November 8.
For those who follow tantric or traditional midnight worship, the Nishita Kaal around midnight is used; but for households, the Pradosh–Vrishabha evening window is the standard and best time.
Lakshmi Puja Vidhi — Step by Step
- Clean and light the home. Complete the Diwali cleaning by daytime; draw rangoli at the threshold, and line the doorway, windows, and rooms with diyas — Lakshmi enters only a home that is clean and lit.
- Set the puja. On a red cloth over a chowki, place idols or images of Lakshmi and Ganesha (Ganesha to the left of Lakshmi from the devotee's view), with Kubera and Saraswati, a Kalash of water topped with mango leaves and a coconut, and coins, gold, or your account book/cash box before them.
- Begin with Ganesha. In the Pradosh muhurat, worship Ganesha first, then invoke Lakshmi with the Shodashopachara (sixteen offerings) — water, roli, akshata, red flowers (lotus is dearest to Lakshmi), incense, a ghee lamp, and naivedya of sweets and kheel-batasha.
- Recite and offer. Chant the Shri Suktam and the Lakshmi and Kubera mantras, worship your ledgers/tools (the Chopda / Bahi-Khata Pujan for businesses), and perform the Lakshmi Aarti (Om Jai Lakshmi Mata).
- Light the whole house. After the puja, light every lamp and keep the home bright through the night — Lakshmi is said to reside where lamps burn and doors are welcoming. Distribute prasad and sweets.

Customs and a Gentle Note
Diwali is a day to light diyas, share sweets and gifts, wear new clothes, and give in charity — Lakshmi favours the generous. Homes are freshened, doorways decorated with torans and rangoli, and the night filled with light. Where fireworks are part of your celebration, choose eco-friendly, low-noise options and keep the air and the elderly, the ailing, and animals in mind — the truest Diwali light is the one that harms nothing.
