Ravi Pradosh Vrat in July 2026 falls on Sunday, July 26 — Ashadha Shukla Trayodashi, the thirteenth tithi of the bright fortnight of the Ashadha lunar month. The Pradosh Kaal — the sacred twilight window for Shiva worship — runs from 6:48 PM to 9:04 PM, a window of two hours and sixteen minutes.
When Pradosh Vrat falls on a Sunday (Ravivar), it becomes Ravi Pradosh — a form of the fast especially kept for health, longevity, vitality, and freedom from disease. The combined energy of Lord Shiva and Surya (the Sun, ruler of Sunday) makes this a particularly auspicious day for those praying for physical strength, recovery from illness, good fortune, and the fulfilment of long-held wishes.

What is Pradosh Vrat
Pradosh is the twilight period — specifically the roughly 90-minute to 3-hour window around sunset on the Trayodashi tithi (thirteenth day of the lunar fortnight). It occurs twice each lunar month: once in the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) and once in the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha).
The word Pradosh itself means "the onset of night" — the liminal hour between day and dark. In Shaiva theology, this is the time when Lord Shiva is said to dance the cosmic Tandava between his silver mountain's halls, and Parvati sits beside him. Worshipping Shiva during Pradosh Kaal — in the exact hours when he dances — is held to carry merit far beyond ordinary worship. The tradition understands Pradosh as a window where the distance between the devotee and the divine narrows to almost nothing.
Because the vrat turns on the tithi being present at sunset, the day of the week on which it lands gives each Pradosh its character — Somvar (Monday) Pradosh for wishes, Bhaum (Tuesday) for freedom from debt and illness, Shani (Saturday) for relief from Saturn, and Ravi (Sunday) for health, long life, and vitality.
Why Ravi Pradosh Matters
Sunday is Ravivar, the day of Surya — the Sun, the atmakaraka or significator of the soul, vitality, health, the eyes, bones, authority, and the father in Vedic astrology. When Pradosh Vrat coincides with Surya's day, the observance is directed especially toward the blessings Surya governs.
Devotees keep Ravi Pradosh for:
- Health and recovery — relief from chronic illness, strength during recovery, and general vitality.
- Long life (ayushya) — the vrat is classically associated with longevity for oneself and one's family.
- Confidence and success — a strong, unafflicted Sun brings authority, recognition, and steadiness of purpose.
- Removal of Sun-related doshas — those with a weak or afflicted Surya in the birth chart often keep Ravi Pradosh as a remedial observance alongside Surya Namaskar and Aditya Hridaya recitation.
Worshipping Shiva — who himself wears the crescent moon and is the lord of time — on Surya's day unites the solar principle of vitality with Shiva's grace over life and death, which is why Ravi Pradosh is held to be so beneficial for health and longevity.

How to Observe Ravi Pradosh — Puja Vidhi
- Sankalp at sunrise. Wake before dawn, bathe, and take the sankalp (vow) to keep the Pradosh fast for the day in devotion to Lord Shiva.
- Keep the fast. Most devotees observe a nirjala or fruit-and-milk fast through the day. Grains are avoided; the fast is traditionally broken only after the evening Pradosh puja.
- Bathe again before Pradosh Kaal. In the late afternoon, bathe once more and wear clean clothes to be ready for the twilight worship.
- Evening puja during Pradosh Kaal (6:48–9:04 PM). Worship before a Shiva lingam or image. Offer abhishekam with water, milk, curd, honey, and Ganga jal; then bilva (bel) leaves — Shiva's most beloved offering — along with white flowers, sandal paste, dhatura, and a lamp of ghee. Recite the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra and Om Namah Shivaya; for Ravi Pradosh, adding the Aditya Hridaya Stotra or Surya's names honours the day's solar character.
- Read the Pradosh Vrat Katha. Recite or listen to the Pradosh katha during the puja.
- Break the fast. After the Pradosh puja and aarti, take the prasad and break the vrat. Offering water (arghya) to the Sun at the next sunrise completes the Ravi Pradosh observance beautifully.
Significance in the Ashadha Season
This Ravi Pradosh sits in the final days of the Ashadha month, just before Ashadha Purnima / Guru Purnima on July 29 and the start of the holy month of Sawan (Shravan) on July 30 — the most powerful stretch of the year for Shiva worship. Keeping Ravi Pradosh now is a fitting way to enter the Shiva-centred weeks ahead. It is one of the recurring twilight vrats devotees keep through the year, like the Saturday Shani Pradosh; each takes its distinct character from the day it falls on.
