What is Rahu Kaal?
Rahu Kaal (also spelled Rahu Kalam) is a period of approximately 90 minutes each day considered inauspicious in Vedic astrology. It is named after Rahu, the ascending lunar node — one of the nine celestial bodies (Navagrahas). Rahu is associated with deception, sudden events, and unforeseen obstacles.
Rahu Kaal occurs at a different time each weekday, calculated by dividing the daylight hours (sunrise to sunset) into eight equal parts. The inauspicious period falls on a specific portion by day: Monday 2nd, Tuesday 7th, Wednesday 5th, Thursday 6th, Friday 4th, Saturday 3rd, Sunday 8th. Times vary by city latitude and change daily.
Traditionally, new ventures, travel, signing agreements, property transactions, and ceremonies are avoided during Rahu Kaal. Routine daily activities are not affected. Many families across India — especially in South India — consult Rahu Kaal before scheduling weddings, business launches, medical procedures, or first day at a new job.
