Kalashtami 2026 โ€” Lord Kala Bhairava worshipped by lamplight on the night of Ashadha Krishna Ashtami, Tuesday July 7

Kalashtami and Masik Krishna Janmashtami 2026 both fall on Tuesday, July 7. They share a single tithi โ€” Ashadha Krishna Ashtami, the eighth day of the dark fortnight โ€” so the same day carries two distinct observances. By night it is Kalashtami, dedicated to Kala Bhairava, the fierce guardian form of Lord Shiva. The same Ashtami is also the month's Masik Krishna Janmashtami, the monthly remembrance of Lord Krishna's birth that recurs every dark-fortnight Ashtami through the year โ€” the great annual Krishna Janmashtami being only the Bhadrapada one.

Kalashtami falls every month on Krishna Ashtami and is kept by devotees of Bhairava as a fast for protection, courage, and freedom from fear. Here are the verified timings, the significance of each observance, and the complete vrat and puja vidhi.

Why the Night Matters for Kalashtami

Unlike most vrats that centre on sunrise or moonrise, Kalashtami belongs to the night. Kala Bhairava is the lord of time (kala) and the nocturnal guardian of Kashi; his worship is traditionally performed after sunset, in the nishita hours when the Ashtami tithi is current. This is why the date is fixed to the Ashtami that prevails through the night of July 7 โ€” the tithi begins at 01:24 PM on July 7 and continues until 12:21 PM on July 8, covering the entire night of the 7th when Bhairava is invoked.

The same logic gently overlaps with Masik Krishna Janmashtami, whose puja is offered around midnight in memory of Krishna's birth at the stroke of midnight in Mathura. One household may keep both: Bhairava in the early night, Bal Gopal at midnight โ€” or choose the observance closest to its family tradition.

Who Is Kala Bhairava

Bhairava means "the terrifying one" โ€” the fierce, uncompromising aspect of Lord Shiva who guards dharma and dissolves fear by embodying it. He is depicted dark-complexioned, carrying a trishul and danda (staff of punishment), often accompanied by a dog (shvana), his vahana. As Kshetrapala, he is the protector of sacred places; in Kashi he is revered as the Kotwal (city guardian), and no pilgrimage there is said to be complete without his darshan.

For devotees, Kala Bhairava governs kala โ€” time itself โ€” and so is invoked to remove untimely fear, sudden obstacles, enemies, black magic, and the heavier afflictions of Shani and Rahuโ€“Ketu, with whom he is closely associated in remedial astrology. Worship of Bhairava on Kalashtami is held to grant courage, protection from unseen dangers, release from negative karma, and steadiness of mind.

Kala Bhairava for Shani, Rahu and Sade Sati

In Jyotisha, Kala Bhairava is one of the most powerful refuges for those passing through difficult planetary periods โ€” especially Shani's Sade Sati and Dhaiya, and the dashas of Rahu and Ketu. Because Bhairava is the lord of time and karma, he is held to soften the lessons these planets bring rather than remove them: the troubles that test, delay, and humble. Saturn (Shani) is even regarded as answerable to Bhairava, which is why his Saturday-night and Kalashtami worship is a classic remedy for Saturn's pressure.

Devotees facing these periods light a sesame-oil lamp before Bhairava on Kalashtami, feed black dogs, and chant the seed mantra:

เฅ เค•เคพเคฒเคญเฅˆเคฐเคตเคพเคฏ เคจเคฎเคƒ โ€” Om Kaal Bhairavaya Namah

Adi Shankaracharya's Kala Bhairava Ashtakam ("Deva-raaja-sevyamaana...") is the most beloved hymn for the day. None of this is a substitute for understanding your own chart, though โ€” the right remedy depends on where Shani, Rahu, or Ketu sit for you. If you are in Sade Sati or starting something new under Saturn, a personal reading matters more than any general remedy.

The Vrat Katha โ€” Bhairava and the Pride of Brahma

The katha most often told on Kalashtami explains how Bhairava came to be. In an assembly of the gods, a dispute arose over who among the Trimurti was supreme. In his pride, Brahma โ€” who in the older telling bore five heads โ€” spoke disrespectfully of Lord Shiva, claiming a creator's authority over him.

From Shiva's wrath a fierce being sprang forth: Kala Bhairava. With a single act he severed the fifth head of Brahma that had uttered the arrogant words โ€” and so the sin of Brahmahatya (the killing of a Brahmin, the gravest of sins) clung to him, the severed skull fastening itself to his hand as the kapala. Bhairava wandered the worlds as a mendicant, unable to set the skull down, until he reached Kashi โ€” and there, at the sacred ground later known as Kapal Mochan, the skull finally fell and he was freed of the sin.

For this reason Shiva appointed him the eternal Kotwal of Kashi, the guardian who keeps watch over the holy city and judges the deeds of all who dwell there. The katha's lesson is the one Kalashtami devotees carry: ego and arrogance invite their own downfall, while sincere surrender โ€” even to the most fearsome face of the divine โ€” purifies and protects.

How to Observe Kalashtami โ€” Puja Vidhi

  1. Sankalp at sunrise. Wake before dawn, bathe, and take the sankalp (vow) to keep the Kalashtami fast for the day in devotion to Lord Kala Bhairava.
  2. Keep the fast. Most devotees observe a phalahar (fruit and milk) fast through the day, avoiding grains, rice, and wheat. Some keep nirjala; the fast is broken only after the night puja.
  3. Night puja of Bhairava. After sunset, set up an image of Kala Bhairava (or worship before a Shiva lingam). Offer a lamp of til (sesame) oil or mustard oil, black sesame, urad dal, red or black flowers, dhoop, and a coconut. Recite the Kala Bhairava Ashtakam (composed by Adi Shankaracharya) and the Om Kaal Bhairavaya Namah mantra.
  4. Feed a dog. Bhairava's vahana is the dog โ€” feeding and caring for a dog on Kalashtami is considered one of the most beloved acts of worship and a direct way to please him.
  5. Masik Janmashtami at midnight (optional). Households that also keep the monthly Janmashtami place a small Bal Gopal idol, bathe it, offer makhan-mishri and tulsi, and rock the cradle at midnight before reciting Krishna's names.
  6. Break the fast. After the night worship and aarti, take the prasad and break the vrat. Donating til, oil, a black cloth, or food to the needy is held to multiply the merit of the day.

Significance โ€” Two Faces of the Same Ashtami

The Krishna Paksha Ashtami carries a striking duality. It is the night of Kala Bhairava, the fierce dissolver of fear and time โ€” and it is the recurring monthly echo of Krishna's birth, the gentlest, most beloved avatar of Vishnu. One face teaches fearlessness through surrender to the terrifying; the other, devotion through love of the divine child.

In practice most households lean to one observance by family custom: Shaiva and Shakta families keep Kalashtami with Bhairava's night puja, while Vaishnava families keep Masik Krishna Janmashtami as a softer monthly vrat leading up to the great Janmashtami in Bhadrapada. Both are equally valid โ€” and both turn on this same Ashadha Krishna Ashtami of July 7. Like the monthly Sankashti Chaturthi for Ganesha, these are the steady, recurring vrats devotees keep through the year โ€” this one within the Ashadha month. As always, follow the tradition your family has kept, and let the tithi, not the calendar date alone, guide your timing.

Frequently asked questions

Kalashtami in July 2026 falls on Tuesday, July 7. It is the Ashadha-month Kalashtami, kept on Krishna Paksha Ashtami. The Ashtami tithi begins at 01:24 PM on July 7 and ends at 12:21 PM on July 8 (Bengaluru time; it varies slightly by city). Because Kala Bhairava is worshipped at night, the puja is performed on the night of July 7, when the Ashtami tithi is current.
Both are observed on Krishna Paksha Ashtami โ€” the eighth day of the dark fortnight. Kalashtami is the monthly fast for Kala Bhairava, and Masik Krishna Janmashtami is the monthly remembrance of Krishna's birth (which always occurs on a Krishna Ashtami). Since they share the same tithi, they coincide every month, including on July 7, 2026.
Kala Bhairava is the fierce, protective form of Lord Shiva โ€” the lord of time and the guardian (Kotwal) of Kashi. He is worshipped on Kalashtami to remove fear, dispel enemies and negative energy, ease the afflictions of Shani and Rahuโ€“Ketu, and grant courage and protection. He is depicted dark-complexioned with a trishul and a dog as his vahana, which is why feeding a dog is a cherished act of worship on this day.
The fast begins at sunrise with a sankalp and is kept through the day, usually on fruit and milk (phalahar), avoiding grains. After sunset, Kala Bhairava is worshipped with a sesame or mustard-oil lamp, black sesame, urad dal, and the Kala Bhairava Ashtakam. Feeding a dog is part of the observance. The fast is broken after the night puja and aarti, when prasad is taken.
Yes โ€” Kala Bhairava is one of the most relied-upon refuges during Shani's Sade Sati and Dhaiya and the dashas of Rahu and Ketu. As the lord of time and karma, he is believed to ease the delays, fears, and trials these planets bring; Saturn is even regarded as answerable to him. Devotees light a sesame-oil lamp on Kalashtami, feed black dogs, and chant Om Kaal Bhairavaya Namah and the Kala Bhairava Ashtakam. The exact remedy still depends on where these planets sit in your own chart, so a personal reading is recommended.
The katha tells how Lord Shiva's wrath at Brahma's arrogance gave rise to Kala Bhairava, who severed Brahma's fifth head. The sin of Brahmahatya clung to him in the form of the skull fastened to his hand, and he wandered until he reached Kashi at Kapal Mochan, where the skull fell and he was freed. Shiva then appointed him the eternal guardian of Kashi. The story teaches that ego invites its own ruin, while surrender to the divine purifies and protects.
