What is Kundali Matching?

Kundali matching, also called Kundali Milan or Ashtakoota Milan, is the Vedic astrology method of assessing compatibility between two people before marriage. It works by comparing the birth charts (kundalis) of the prospective bride and groom across 8 categories called kootas, with a total of 36 points (gunas).

The higher the score out of 36, the more compatible the match is considered to be. A score of 18 or above is generally considered acceptable for marriage, while 24 and above is considered good.

The 8 Kootas โ€” Complete Breakdown

1. Varna Koot (1 point)

Varna refers to the spiritual compatibility and ego levels of the couple. The four varnas in descending order are Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra โ€” assigned based on the moon nakshatra, not birth caste.

For full marks, the groom's varna should be equal to or higher than the bride's. This koota carries 1 point.

2. Vashya Koot (2 points)

Vashya measures the degree of mutual attraction and control in the relationship โ€” essentially who influences whom. The 12 zodiac signs are grouped into 5 vashya types: Manav (human), Chatushpad (quadruped), Jalchar (aquatic), Vanchar (wild), and Keeta (insect).

Full marks are given when both signs have mutual vashya. 2 points are awarded for full compatibility, 1 point for partial, and 0 for none.

3. Tara Koot (3 points)

Tara (also called Dina) measures health and wellbeing compatibility. It is calculated by counting the nakshatras from the bride's birth nakshatra to the groom's, and vice versa, then dividing by 9.

A remainder of 1, 3, 5, or 7 is considered auspicious. This koota carries 3 points and is considered important for longevity and health in the marriage.

4. Yoni Koot (4 points)

Yoni measures sexual compatibility and intimacy between the couple. Each of the 27 nakshatras is assigned an animal symbol โ€” ranging from horse and elephant to cat, rat, and cobra. The compatibility between these animal pairs determines the score.

  • Same yoni: 4 points (best)
  • Friendly yoni: 3 points
  • Neutral yoni: 2 points
  • Enemy yoni: 1 point
  • Hostile enemy yoni: 0 points

5. Graha Maitri Koot (5 points)

Also called Rashyadhipati, this koota measures intellectual compatibility and friendship between the couple. It compares the ruling planets (lords) of the moon signs of both individuals.

  • Both lords are friends: 5 points
  • One friend, one neutral: 4 points
  • Both neutral: 3 points
  • One friend, one enemy: 1 point
  • Both enemies: 0 points

This is one of the most important kootas as it governs long-term mental compatibility and friendship in the marriage.

6. Gana Koot (6 points)

Gana measures temperament and nature compatibility. All 27 nakshatras are divided into three ganas:

  • Deva (divine) โ€” gentle, sattvic nature

  • Manushya (human) โ€” balanced, rajasic nature

  • Rakshasa (demonic) โ€” intense, tamasic nature

  • Same gana: 6 points

  • Deva-Manushya or Manushya-Deva: 5 points

  • Deva-Rakshasa or Rakshasa-Deva: 0 points

  • Manushya-Rakshasa or Rakshasa-Manushya: 0 points

Gana koot carries 6 points and is considered very important. A Deva-Rakshasa mismatch is seen as a significant incompatibility.

7. Bhakoot Koot (7 points)

Bhakoot measures emotional compatibility, love, and prosperity in the relationship. It is calculated based on the relative positions of the moon signs of both individuals.

Certain sign combinations are considered inauspicious โ€” specifically the 2-12, 5-9, and 6-8 relationships between the two moon signs. These combinations are called Bhakoot Dosha.

  • No dosha: 7 points
  • Dosha present: 0 points

Bhakoot carries the second highest weightage and is taken very seriously. However, certain planetary placements can cancel Bhakoot Dosha.

8. Nadi Koot (8 points)

Nadi is the most heavily weighted koota, carrying 8 out of 36 points. It measures health compatibility and genetic compatibility between the couple.

The 27 nakshatras are divided into three nadis:

  • Adi (Vata) โ€” nakshatras 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25
  • Madhya (Pitta) โ€” nakshatras 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26
  • Antya (Kapha) โ€” nakshatras 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27

When both individuals have the same nadi, it is called Nadi Dosha โ€” considered the most serious dosha in kundali matching. The belief is that same-nadi couples may face health issues or difficulty conceiving.

  • Different nadis: 8 points
  • Same nadi: 0 points (Nadi Dosha)

Interpreting Your Total Score

Score out of 36Interpretation
0 โ€“ 17Not recommended for marriage
18 โ€“ 24Acceptable โ€” proceed with caution
24 โ€“ 32Good compatibility
32 โ€“ 36Excellent compatibility

What Score is Good Enough?

A score of 18 is the traditional minimum. However, many astrologers today recommend not marrying below 24. A score above 28 is considered very good.

It is important to note that a high score does not guarantee a happy marriage, and a lower score does not mean the marriage will fail. Kundali matching is one input among many โ€” including the individual charts, dashas, and personal compatibility.

Doshas and Cancellations

Three doshas in kundali matching are considered serious:

Nadi Dosha โ€” same nadi for both partners. Can be cancelled if both have the same nakshatra but different padas, or if certain planetary conditions are met.

Bhakoot Dosha โ€” 2-12, 5-9, or 6-8 moon sign relationship. Can be cancelled if the lords of both moon signs are friends or the same planet.

Gana Dosha โ€” Deva-Rakshasa combination. Harder to cancel, though some astrologers consider it less critical in modern times.

Beyond the 36 Gunas

Guna score is just the beginning of kundali matching. A thorough match also examines:

  • Mangal Dosha (Mars placement)
  • Longevity of both partners
  • Dasha compatibility at time of marriage
  • 7th house and 7th lord strength
  • Venus and Jupiter placement

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 18 out of 36 enough to get married? 18 is the traditional minimum, but most astrologers today recommend at least 24. A score between 18โ€“24 is acceptable if there are no major doshas and the individual charts are strong.

Can kundali matching be done with just the name and date of birth? Accurate kundali matching requires the birth nakshatra of both individuals, which is determined from the moon's position at birth. Date, time, and place of birth give the most accurate result. Name-based matching is less reliable.

What happens if Nadi Dosha is present? Nadi Dosha is considered serious but not always deal-breaking. Certain conditions can cancel it โ€” same nakshatra but different pada, or both partners having the same rashi. Consult a qualified astrologer before rejecting a match solely on Nadi Dosha.

Is kundali matching mandatory for Hindu marriage? It is traditional but not legally mandatory. Many Hindu families consider it an important step, particularly in arranged marriages. Its importance varies significantly by region, community, and family tradition.

What if we have a love marriage โ€” does kundali matching still matter? Many couples in love marriages also check kundali compatibility, often after deciding to marry, as a way to identify potential areas of friction and prepare for them. It is entirely a personal and family decision.
