Kamika Ekadashi 2026 falls on Sunday, August 9. It is the Ekadashi of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of the Shravana lunar month โ the first Ekadashi of Sawan and the first to arrive after Devshayani Ekadashi, when Lord Vishnu enters his cosmic sleep and the four sacred months of Chaturmas begin. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his form as Sridhar, Kamika Ekadashi is counted among the most merit-giving fasts of the entire year.
The name itself carries its promise: Kamika, from kama, "desire" โ the Ekadashi that fulfils the sincere wishes of the devotee and washes away sin. The scriptures place it especially high because it falls at the opening of Chaturmas, the most devotional stretch of the year, when a single fast kept for Lord Vishnu is said to carry the merit of many. Here is the verified date, the Vrat Katha that Lord Krishna narrated to Yudhishthira, the special glory of Tulsi on this day, and the complete way to observe the fast.

The Significance of Kamika Ekadashi
Every Ekadashi is sacred to Lord Vishnu, but each holds its own promise, and Kamika Ekadashi's is twofold: the fulfilment of one's heartfelt desires and the dissolving of sin. It is the first Ekadashi kept after Lord Vishnu retires to his cosmic slumber on Devshayani, and so it opens the season of Chaturmas โ the four months in which worldly ceremonies pause and devotion takes their place. A fast observed at the very threshold of this season is held to carry unusual weight.
The Puranas praise Kamika Ekadashi in the highest terms. Its merit is said to equal that of bathing in the Ganga and other holy rivers, of performing great yagnas, and of giving cows and gold in charity. Above all, it is described as a fast that grants freedom from sin โ even, the scriptures say, from sins as grave as the taking of a life. For the one who keeps it with faith, ancestors are pleased, obstacles dissolve, and the desires held sincerely in the heart find their way to fulfilment.
What sets Kamika Ekadashi apart from every other is the glory of Tulsi. On this day, the offering of the sacred Tulsi leaf to Lord Vishnu is said to please him beyond all measure โ a single Tulsi leaf laid at his feet on Kamika Ekadashi is dearer to the Lord than pearls, gold, or the costliest gifts. Even to see Tulsi, to touch her, to water her, or to sprinkle the earth she grows in on this day is held to wash away accumulated sin. This is why the Kamika fast is kept, above all, with Tulsi in hand and Hari's name on the lips.
The Vrat Katha of Kamika Ekadashi
The power of this vrat was made known when King Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna to tell him of the Ekadashi that falls in the dark fortnight of Shravana. Krishna answered that this same question had once been put by the sage Narada to Lord Brahma himself, and he repeated what Brahma had revealed.
In a certain village there lived a proud and hot-tempered warrior. One day, caught in a bitter quarrel, he struck and killed a Brahmin. The horror of what he had done fell upon him at once, for the killing of a Brahmin โ Brahmahatya โ is counted the gravest of all sins. Seeking to make amends, the warrior came forward to perform the funeral rites for the man he had slain. But the Brahmins of the village would not permit it: so heavy was the stain upon him that they refused to let him touch the sacred rites, and he was left an outcast, carrying his sin alone.
In deep remorse the warrior went to a wise sage and begged to know how he might be cleansed. The sage told him of Kamika Ekadashi: "Observe the fast of the Shravana Krishna Ekadashi with complete devotion to Lord Vishnu, worship him with Tulsi and a lamp, and keep vigil through the night. By the grace of this fast, even the sin of Brahmahatya is dissolved." The warrior did exactly as he was told. He kept the Kamika fast with sincere faith, worshipping Sridhar Vishnu with Tulsi through the day and staying awake in devotion through the night. And it is told that Lord Vishnu, pleased by his repentance and his fast, lifted the terrible sin from him โ so that the man who had been an outcast was made pure again. Thus the katha carries its promise still: that no burden of sin is too heavy for the grace of Kamika Ekadashi to lift.

How to Observe Kamika Ekadashi โ Vrat Vidhi
The Ekadashi fast is observed in the spirit of three days, though the fast itself is kept on the eleventh tithi and broken on the twelfth.
Dashami (the day before). On the tenth tithi โ Saturday, August 8 โ eat only a single sattvik meal before sunset, avoiding grains, onion, garlic, and tamasic food, so the body enters the fast lightly.
Ekadashi (the fast โ August 9). Rise in the Brahma Muhurta before dawn, bathe, and take the sankalp โ the vow to keep the fast for Lord Vishnu, offering your sincere prayer at his feet. The fast may be kept at three levels, according to your health and capacity:
- Nirjala โ without even water, the strictest form.
- Phalahara / nirahara โ without grains, taking only water, fruit, milk, and permitted vrat foods.
- Saatvik ekahara โ a single grain-free meal for those who cannot fast fully.
Through the day, worship Lord Vishnu as Sridhar: bathe the image or Shaligram, and offer Tulsi leaves โ dearest of all to the Lord on this day โ along with yellow flowers, sandal, incense, fruit, and a ghee lamp. It is especially auspicious on Kamika Ekadashi to keep a ghee or sesame-oil lamp burning before the Lord. Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama and chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, read or listen to the Kamika Ekadashi Vrat Katha, and spend the night in jagran โ a vigil of bhajan and the chanting of Hari's name โ for wakeful devotion on Ekadashi night multiplies the fruit of the fast.
Dwadashi โ Parana (August 10). Break the fast the next morning, after sunrise and within the Dwadashi tithi, once the Ekadashi tithi has ended. Breaking it too early, or after Dwadashi has passed, diminishes the vrat โ so the Parana window matters; check your city's exact timing. Break the fast with sattvik food, and it is customary to give daan โ food, grain, or clothing to a Brahmin or to someone in need โ before eating yourself.
What to Avoid on Ekadashi
- Grains and beans โ rice, wheat, lentils, and pulses are strictly avoided; this is the central rule of every Ekadashi.
- Tamasic food and drink โ onion, garlic, meat, eggs, and alcohol.
- Anger, gossip, and harsh speech โ Ekadashi restrains the senses as much as the stomach; ill conduct undoes the fast's purpose.
- Sleeping through the day โ the vrat is meant for worship and remembrance, not idleness.
- Rice on Ekadashi โ by long tradition, even non-fasting members of the household avoid rice on Ekadashi day.
Kamika Ekadashi within Sawan and Chaturmas
Kamika Ekadashi's place in the calendar is the very source of its power. It falls in Shravana (Sawan), the month most beloved of devotees, and it is the first Ekadashi of Chaturmas โ the four months (July 25 to around November 20, 2026) when Lord Vishnu rests in his cosmic sleep, weddings and griha pravesh pause, and inward devotion takes the place of outward ceremony. A fast kept at the opening of this season sets the tone for the months of prayer that follow. It stands at the head of a whole cluster of Sawan observances โ the Shravan Somwar vrats, Sawan Shivratri, and the later Shravana Putrada Ekadashi. Observed with Tulsi in hand and Hari's name on the lips, Kamika Ekadashi is a fitting doorway into the most sacred stretch of the year.
